Datalogic Powerscan PM9500 Series

The PowerScan 9500 family of imagers represents the new 2D handheld area imagers with rugged mechanics for industrial applications.

Recently launched, the corded PowerScan™ PD9500 and the mobile PowerScan PBT9500 with Bluetooth® wireless technology models have already demonstrated their value in the field. With the introduction of the STAR Cordless System™ models, the PowerScan 9500 family is now complete offering an unequalled variety of models to satisfy the most demanding of customers with a model perfectly suited for their application requirements.

An intuitive and effortless scanning experience is the target of the PowerScan 9500 family: it is a blend of the Datalogic experience with optical systems, hardware architecture, decoding software and cordless technologies. The result is an area imager with outstanding performance in terms of snappiness and depth-of-field.

The PowerScan 9500 imager is targeted to be the most suitable solution for all applications in Warehouses, Transportation & Logistics and Manufacturing where the bar code is at a handy distance (within 1.0 m / 3.3 ft.), regardless of whether it is a 1D or 2D code. The omnidirectional reading capability combined with the snappiness and the depth-of-field features allow the PowerScan 9500 area imager to be faster and therefore, a preferred solution over standard laser scanners and represent their natural replacement.

Like the other components of the 9500 family, the Datalogic STAR Cordless System will feature specific models specialized for reading codes marked with DPM (Direct Part Marking) technology. The overall mechanics are the same as the other models, while the optics and the software is optimized to address items marked with DPM technology.

Aim, trigger, decode: it is that simple!

Optical Options

The PowerScan PM9500 imager is equipped with the most advanced optics from Datalogic ADC. It is proposed in some variance to address different needs in the marketplace.

• The PM9500 imager is equipped with a standard optical set (fixed focus objective). The objective aperture is 40° H x 26° V to allow optimized reading conditions on medium and low resolution codes. Scanning is simple and intuitive in a reading range from contact to over 80.0 cm / 31.5 in.

• The PM9500-HP imager is equipped with a liquid lens which allows the imager to adapt the focus at different distances. The result is a versatile optic able to satisfy any kind of need with a single scanner:

  • In the short range (<15.0 cm / 0.5 ft.) the device behaves as a High Density scanner allowing the reading of 2.5 mil (1D) codes and 4 mil (2D) codes.
  • In the medium range distance (<50.0 cm / 1.64 ft.), the imager is able to read any kind of bar code. Because of the wide angle aperture of the objective (50° H x 40° V), this device can also read very long bar codes at short distances and allows the ability to capture images as wide as an A4 page at a distance of about 25.0 cm / 0.8 ft.
  • o In the long range distance (>50.0 cm / 1.64 ft.) the imager can read medium / low resolution codes. The maximum reading distance depends on the code resolution and exceeds 1.2 m / 3.9 ft. for 40 mil codes.

All in previous models, the HP model contains optics from 3 different devices combined into one imager, allowing maximum versatility in all applications.

• The DPM model (PM9500-DPM) is specialized for ‘Direct Part Marking’ codes. It is a ‘hybrid’ device, meaning that it is capable of reading standard codes and additionally is specialized to read bar codes marked with DPM technology. It behaves like a high density scanner and the depth-of-field performance is shorter compared to the 9500 models.

All models share the same hardware and software architecture. With the noted differences indicated above relating to the optical systems, the overall technical features are the same.

To allow intuitive usage and fast operation, the aiming pattern of the HP models is completely new and includes:

• A central cross, useful in ‘picking mode’ where a code must be read even when surrounded by many other bar codes within the same reading area.

• Four dots in the corners and four segments that clearly identify the captured area. This frame is particularly useful when more codes must be read in a single scan cycle or for ‘image based’ applications.

The standard model aimer includes the central cross and the four dots in the corners.

Ease of Use and Ergonomics

Like the previous PowerScan family, the new 9500 imagers offer-3GL™ (Three Green Lights) technology, a combination of Datalogic’s patented ‘Green Spot’ technology and dual good-read LED’s. The 3GL™ technology provides a clear visual indication for a successful read no matter how noisy the environment is or where the bar code is located (in hand, on the shelf or on the floor).

User comfort is guaranteed because of the scanner ergonomics consisting of the handle shape, a well-balanced weight and the intuitive aiming system, allowing the highest first-pass reading rate while reducing unnatural wrist movement or rotation. Additionally, the PowerScan 9500 area imager uses a soft-pulsed white illumination light that offers several advantages:

• It is similar to ambient light (natural or artificial) resulting in a less perceivable flash light and therefore is less troublesome to the operator during scan-intensive applications.

• It allows better reading performance because it is less sensitive to the colour combination of the bar code and the background. The combination of coloured codes with coloured backgrounds normally results in poor contrast when illuminated with red light. The white light improves the performances in this ‘real life’ condition.

The PowerScan PM9500 imager features Datalogic’s Motionix motion-sensing technology which detects the natural actions of the operator to automatically switch on the aimer when the scanner is handled by the user. Aiming on the bar code becomes easy and fast without the need of any action on the trigger.

Major Industry Applications

In addition to the traditional applications in Manufacturing/Shop Floor and Transportation & Logistics/Warehouse and Distribution Centre management, several other applications are becoming important, which are driven by the increased versatility offered by 2D codes and scanners. Access Control, Event Ticketing, Security Check, Age Verification and Mobile Couponing are becoming more important. The 2D technology has contributed to this growth because it allows the management of more information on a single bar code, thus increasing the security of those applications. In addition, 2D technology offers the capability of reading bar codes on mobile phones, the new standard for on-line ticketing and promotional/advertising campaigns. These new applications benefit by operator mobility and by the bi-directionality of the radio communication (normally coupled with the display model) and therefore are perfectly satisfied with the new PowerScan PM9500 imagers that combine the great versatility of 2D reading with the outstanding mobility guaranteed by the Datalogic STAR2.0 Cordless System. All the applications listed below in Warehouses and Logistic Centres must be intended as ‘on foot’ applications (i.e.: applications where the operator is walking through the warehouse or scanning in a standing position). Vehicle Mount Applications (where the user is on a vehicle) normally require long distance reading capabilities (5-10 m / 16-32 ft.) and can be solved using an Auto Range laser scanner, such as the PowerScan 8300-AR reader.
